Pleo Dinosaur - A UGOBE Life Form

Okay, I really wanted this toy for myself, not the kids. I thought it would somehow be like a pet without the responsibility, or maybe it was just so darned cute I couldn't help myself. It has been almost 9 months and here is what I know. 1) It is really cute 2) If you can program it, power to you, but I never could manage to make my own skit 3) It really does respond to touch 4) it is fascintated with my black and white cat for some reason 5) It gets around pretty well 5) the kids seem to really enjoy it 6) for a 4 hour charge you get about 1 hour of play 7) there really isn't much you can do with it. Of course I bought it back when it was alot more expensive, but even at a lower price, if I had to do it all over again, I think I would just skip it. It really is an amazing robotic toy, and perhaps if I could figure out how to make my own skit, I would have enjoyed it more.

I don't own one of these but we saw it at the Tech Museum. It's really neat to watch when the person knows what is going on and how to use it but it seems to me that you can't just throw this to a child and let them figure it out. It would take a lot of parental involvement to use this toy.
The employee would say such things as "His feelings are hurt now", "Now he is going to rebel against you", "he is tired", "do this and he will do that".
So it was totally neat to watch but I wouldn't want to have to read up on it and figure it out by myself because I have three children to take care of and just don't have the time.
The photos don't do it justice; it is actually cute in real.
What's really neat is that the rubber exterior somehow masks the sound so you can't hear the robotic clicking of it when it moves.
We own Biscuit, the Golden Retriever dog by Hasbro, and while it is user-friendly and cute, all the robotic clicking can be heard, which is less realistic.
Disregard my durability star rating above since we do not own it.

It's christmas eve and I can't get any of the downloads or read any of the forums.
I just want to charge the thing, make sure it's updated and put it under the christmas tree, but the pleo website doesn't have working forums and you can't download the darn software unless you are registered. And trying to register doesn't work (500 internal server error).
what a lousy experience.
Oh yeah, additionally the batteries didn't charge unless I set something on top of them to hold them in contact with the charger.
And last of all -- the battery pack appears to be composed of 6 AA batteries, but they seem to charge a lot of money for it. Why not let it run on standard AA batteries? I could have hours of batteries charged. I hate that - it's a revenue stream (as if you need to spend more) but not great for the purchaser.

Its probably early days in the product cycle. We expected more diversity of experience. The user guide on the internet is not downloadable or printable.
I am not recommending it to anyone yet.

This is a toy, not a pet. Artificial intelligence is an oxymoron. The organization of chips, mechanics, thermoplastic material, and electrical energy, however "life-like" they may seem, do not constitute life any more than do a collection of tin cans in the sunshine. Life does not come from a battery, life comes from life. To those who think that "no cleaning up" after this so-called pet is a plus, I ask you, "Just what exactly is your quarrel with reality?" Reality, or life, is messy. So what? The rewards (such as love, generosity, and compassion) more than justify the work involved. Try it some time. And teach your children to try it, too. (A puppy would help, or even a baby brother or sister.) We all might become better humans for it.
