Rating: -
I purchased the Roboreptile to introduce my students the the basics of programming. The students relate well to the robot and are willing to spend time constructing a program to make him go through his paces. The robot works as advertised and is a lot of fun. Use rechargeable batteries as it is power hungry and it works much better on a smooth surface. Would purchase again.

I really should have made this a video review because the main point of annoyance with this item is getting it out of the packaging. Trust everyone who says it is painful. When it came to getting the last couple of wires off I was about to rip the cardboard into shreds with my teeth. I also had to go out and buy a slender Phillips screwdriver. (Why does it seem I am always buying screwdrivers? Where do they go? That space/time rift in Cardiff?)
Anyway I got her out of the box and powered her up and the dogs gathered round to see what I had bought them. They jumped back as she began to roar and come to life. (Tip: Buy rechargeable batteries-- a lot of rechargeable batteries.)
The office has short industrial carpet which I hate but which the Roboreptile gets around on very well. One problem I had was her desire to bash her head repeatedly against one side of a set of pocket doors. Because I have had the same feeling at times I could not fault her too much on this.
I would also recommend that while this may be offered as a toy for 8 years old and up I feel it's really for older kids and anyone else who has an interest in robotics. There are several web sites where people post about modding their pet robos and offer some interesting videos.
My Roboreptile is far more interesting than the Aibo dog I bought a few years ago although the rechargeable battery that came with that particular Christmas Toy That Was Too Fun to Give Away would be a nice addition to this toy.
Oh, boy, I can hardly wait for the cat to see her.

I bought this after seeing an ad for one of the other robotic toys from this company on TV. It looked really cool but I think they have a ways to go before its worth selling to the public. If you have carpet dont even bother to get one. Mine would barely walk forward on carpet, it wouldnt back up at all. Which is important since that is how it avoids obstacles by backing and turning and then going in a new direction. The infared sensors seem to hardly work either since it would run into something before it even realized there was something in the way. The manual also said you could make the toy follow the remote. Mine never would. It also said when it was in listening mode you could make a loud noise and it would run to it. Mine wouldn't. When I put it in guard mode it would hear things but could never see anything unless i put my hand withing an inch or less from its face. After the 2nd day one of the front legs quit working so now all it will do is walk in circles. I barely played with it no more then 20 minutes the first day. It does not get around very good either since I seemed to spend all my time getting it unstuck from anywhere it walked towards on the first day. The only plus I could mention was that it does have very cool animation moves and sounds.
When i put it in the kitchen it just walked back and forth between the stove and cabinets banging its nose into each over and over before it realized something was in the way. I sure hope their other robotic toys are better than this one.

This is a very fun toy. We like to watch it in it's roam mode. It is like it is alive. We like to watch it eat. My 8 year old daughter who loves dinosaurs loves it. I confess, I took it one morning to watch it roam the kitchen for fun. -Mom of Dino crazed girl.

We got two Roboreptiles for our young boys, ages 5 and 7. Both of them love them, but they also are both really into dinosaurs so that might be part of why they like them so much. They have had them for about a month and haven't managed to break them yet (only really dropped a couple of times so far), and are still playing with them. When playing with them a lot, they can really eat thru the batteries pretty quick (like 6 AA batteries in about 2-3 days), we might try some rechargable batteries. The roboreptiles don't work on thick carpet; we have some "indoor/outdoor" type carpet in our family room which is basically flat and they seem to work fine on that. When in the roaming mode, roboreptiles can get stuck in things like chair legs pretty easy, but the kids don't care, they just move them and keep playing. If you are really into robotics and are looking for a state-of-the-art robot, this is probably not it; but if you are looking for a toy for kids the roboreptile is a great kids toy.
