LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game System - Pink

Quick...push your chair away from your computer desk and run to Walmart. I purchased this on Black Friday from Walmart for $30 but the normal price is still way below what this company is asking! What a rip off!

We already bought one of these for my daughters 6th birthday back in August. She looved it! Atthis time, my soon to be 5 year old daughter said that is what I want exactly. It is durable, educational, and fun. They both love sharing the games. Great for 'alone time' as well!

First - the first one I got didn't work. Very disappointing for the five year old in question, but these things happen. I didn't mark the rating down as a result - I comment on it only so that if a pattern emerges you have that information
Second - it doesn't come with a lot of games. She was tired of the games it came with about two hours later. On the other hand, being five, part of the thrill of having a birthday is all of the new stuff... two weeks later she continues to play those same games quite enthusiastically and they seem to be the appropriate degree of difficulty.
Third - if you are buying a leapster for a girl, get this one. It probably sounds silly to everyone else out there, but it really made it special. Her brothers and parents were convinced she didn't need this because her brother had graduated from his to a DS, so his red one was available. Aside from the fact that older brothers tend to maintain control over everything they ever give their younger siblings I thought the pink and purple was cool. When the first one didn't work out I was instructed to please get another one that works and "make sure it's pink and purple".
Fourth - it doesn't come with a charger of any sort. I think this is indicated in the description, but I'm just pointing it out so that you're not taken by surprise. I got her rechargable batteries for it instead which seemed to work. (They now have rechargeables that come charged for those of you who are giving this as a gift to be used immediately. This adds about $20 to the total gift cost.)
All in all it was a very popular gift.

The company suggests using alkaline batteries (not longer lasting lithium). The downside to that is that this device will run for a couple days (so mere hours of play time) on alkaline batteries and then die. We've had ours for about 18-20 mos., and it doesn't work at all with batteries despite trying to "clean" the battery area. Lest you think we treat the thing poorly, that couldn't be further from the truth. My daughter is not snacking and drinking while using the Leapster. She's not dropping it on concrete floors. When she's done, it promptly goes back into a zipped up backback, along with the games, so it's kept dust free. The Leapster is in pristine condition. But does it work? Only with the AC Adapter, which means we can't take it anywhere with us. Leap Frog has managed to hood wink me into purchasing a Leapster and an L-Max, BOTH of which have the same problem (both of our devices LOOK in great condition and were taken excellent care of - way beyond what any company would expect from a consumer, so the problem isn't with us, but with the low longevity of the Leapster product.) The company does not stand behind this product and probably knows it's flaws (thus the 90 day warranty). If I could do it all over again, I'd buy a Nintendo DS or something that might actually turn on and stand up to some play time. Ugh. I'll never buy Leap Frog products again.

I got this for my 4 year old grandaughter and she loved it. She even took a sweater back to get another game for it. She was playing it in the morning, got in the car for preschool and continued playing, got in the car to come home and continued playing.Loves it!
