LeapFrog® Leapster L-Max® Game: Letters on the Loose
Rating: -
Santa brought us Letters on the Loose, and after playing with it I had to tell my little one that Santa made a huge mistake with this game. It is NOOOOOO fun. Santa thought you could chase letters and pick them out of groups etc. but it's not like that at all. There's a few times of picking out the letter of interest from three letters, after you do this 3 - 4 times the game forces you to copy the letter you're working on by presenting dashed lines. It is at this point that the game sucks big time. It wants you to trace the lines exactly - there's no smart fit software in there to give a little kid credit for the right kind of shape - if she's not perfectly dead on with her tracing it keeps telling you to do it again, and not in a kind sounding encouraging way. It sounds pretty darned critical. My daughter is not easily frustrated, and this got her down. I tried the tracing part, and it gave ME an attitude! Otherwise I don't find the alphabet creatively or compellingly presented. I have not bothered to write many reviews in my life, but this game drove me to it. Don't buy it unless your child is already in like second grade and has really high self esteem. It's like Leap Frog had the World's most boring unfun sadistic teachers design this one.

We got this cartridge for my 5 1/2 year old daughter and my 4 year old son. What is great about this particular cartridge is that it works great for kids at different ages and levels of ability. My 4 yo is learning to write letters and my dd is gaining more confidence and getting more practice in her letter writing skills which is precisely what each one needed. She is so excited to show me the letter on the tv that she made on her leapster to put into her talking alphabet book. Plus they have fun games for each letter that challenges their hand-eye coordination. This has just become the new favorite!

We had to call customer service which walked us through the process of recalibrating the stylus. The games worked great after that.
My son has had it for only two days and asked to do his preschool homework which is writing letters. He hadn't shown any interest in writing before thatt. While writing his letters on paper my son made the same descending tones in the game. Too cute!
My son doesn't have much patience for extended sessions but he will pick up this game many times throughout the day to play with it for a few minutes.

I purchased a Leapster (as well as this game) for my 4-year old at the recommendation of a friend. I was hesitant to give her a "video game", but I was assured that this was more of a learning tool. Sure enough, it exceeded all of my expectations and my daughter adores it. She plays"Letter Factory" and "Letters on the Loose" non-stop, asking for the Leapster as soon as she wakes up in the morning.
To my complete surprise, within having these games for one week, she was noticeably more knowledgeable. Whereas a few weeks ago, I could point to a letter and ask "Which Letter is This?" and she would reply "I don't know". She's now telling me which letter it is and what sound it makes. Amazing! I am stunned at her progress.
The program itself is logical, very nicely animated and fun, too! It makes her laugh and she constantly wants to show me the various games. She giggles in delight every time she plays. I would highly recommend this for any preschooler. I can't wait to see what other learning games Leapster develops next!

For the last two years my daughter kept writing her letters in the wrong direction or even not at all. We bought this game for her Leapster and in a week she could write the whole alphabet near perfect. I highly recommend this!
