I have a three and five year old and they love the leapster. At first we had one and shared and as much as they liked it i went out and bought two more. They have learned so much and love to play all the games. The five year old used to play super nintendo but now with the leapster he plays this alot more and LEARNS!! They especially like to put it on the tv. They are the best for trips, even daily trips to school i bring them along. They are both happy and learning, too! The good thing they can use this for a few years so it is well worth the money. I even bought the nintendo ds lite and they still play the leapster. I also have v-smile and they play that also but prefer the leapster. Your kids will love it and learn so so much.

We bought this for my son for christmas and he LOVED it!!! But it broke after 1 month!! There was sound but the screen was blank!! We exchanged it for a new one and the new one has worked well for the past couple of months, hopfully it lasts.

I just got off the phone with Leapster, and apparently the plastic screen protectors are no longer provided with the L-Max units (for units manufactured after July 2007). I wish I had known this before I sent back two units! The screen protectors will be available for purchase through Leapster for $3.00, but are currently backordered 2-3 months.
Other than that issue (which is really MY issue, not my son's), my 4 1/2- year old son LOVES his L-Max!! He especially enjoys the Letters on the Loose game. I am not a fan of video games or much TV for youngsters, but this is one thing I am ok letting my son use. It is really reinforcing his letter-writing and he's even learning basic math skills by playing the ScoobyDoo Snacks game that comes with the unit.
I am VERY glad we made this purchase, but will be even happier when we get a screen protector for it!

This product is awesome! It was well worth the money. I had previously bought a vtech toy similar to this style and it only lasted half a day between my three children. This toy has lasted! Also, my five year old is still interested in the toy!! We recently took a long road trip and it kept my children entertained for the majority of the trip! Well worth the money!! I even enjoy playing it when I am stuck in an office waiting somewhere. I can't wait to try out some of the games that you can buy for it.

Out of all the toys I have bought for my 4-year-old son over the years, this is by far the best purchase I have ever made. I was a little skeptical about buying it at first because like alot of 3-4 year olds, my son has a very short attention span and loses interest in things very quickly. Alot of great toys in our household were played with once and then never played with again. I was also skepitcal about how much educational value the games for this would actually offer. Alot of toys, especially video games such as these, claim to be educational but are for the most part, simply entertainment and an excuse for kids to become couch potatoes.
In the end, I decided to give it a shot, and I couldn't be MORE PLEASED with this toy and the games we have purchased for it. We purchased 6 games along with the Leapster L-Max system, and I am very impressed with how educational the games are. (Especially the games "Letters on the Loose" and "Numbers on the Run") They are fun and interesting enough to keep his attention for long periods of time, yet they are also very educational. The "Numbers on The Run" game is my son's favorite as well as mine because it has taught him so many different things, including using the pen tool to learn to write numbers or to drag numbers from one spot to another, which is what I am the most happy with, as my son was having alot of trouble with his fine motor skills.
Another thing that I really like about most of the games is that they give praise when the player has answered a question correctly or done something right, and a simple "let's try that again" or "no, that's ____ what we're looking for is ____" when they have chosen an incorrect answer, which is great because it allows children to play and learn without getting as easily frustrated when they don't do something correctly.
I'm really happy with this purchase because it keeps my son's attention and he's always learning something while he plays it. He got it for Christmas a couple of months ago, and still plays with it daily. My only gripe is that the Leapster L-Max doesn't come with an A/C adapter so that you can play it without any batteries, but if you purchase the Recharging/Docking station that Amazon also sells, that does come with an A/C adapter. The docking station or at least some rechargeable batteries are a MUST with the L-Max because it sucks up battery juice FAST.
The top 2 games I would recommend with this would be "Letters on the Loose" and "Numbers on the Run" because I think they are the most educational and fun out of all the games we purchased along with the L-Max. (yes, I've also played all the games we own myself) My 4-year-old's favorite game is also "Numbers on The Run"
