Leapster L-MAX Hardware (TV Feature)
Rating: -
My 4-year-old grandson loves his Leapster...and the games available to go with it. His younger 2-year-old brother also loves it...unfortunately the younger one damaged the Leapster and it no longer responds correctly. But, we have purchased a second one because it is such great fun...and will keep it out of the hands of the younger brother until he grows old enough to take take care of it.

I won't get into how wonderful the Leapster L-Max is because that's already been done! I just wanted to clarify that YES you CAN play the original Leapster games on the L-Max in BOTH handheld AND TV mode!! I was confused about this and hence why I never bought it until seeing it 50% off. You can play ALL Leapster games on the L-Max in TV mode. The only difference is, the L-Max games have additional features to make the most of the TV link. The other games play just as normal but are visible on the TV and the handheld at the same time. Hope this clears up any questions! I wondered about this for a long time and could never find a clear answer until we bought one ourselves.

Buyers beware: we're on our second Leapster L-max in four months. Both worked great initially but eventually developed problems. The screen went dead on the first one. We returned it, waited several weeks for a refund, and purchased a second, hoping for better luck. After two months of use the second malfunctioned as well by turning itself off automatically a few minutes into the game (despite our having changed the batteries several times). I supervised our son while he played with it so can say with certainty that he didn't damage, drop or mistreat the toy in any way. It just broke. Twice.
We won't be buying a third.

My 5 year old grandson has V-Tech at his house and we wanted something different for when he visits his grandparents. So we purchased the l-max leapster. I like the fact that you can use the game discs for both the leapster and the l-max leapster in this handheld game. My grandson plays with it every visit and often includes me in the games with him. My only concern is that the pen (stylus) may eventually mar the screen. But so far we have had no problems.

Although I agree with al the reviews who thinks this toy is beyond amazing (its educational, high tech, combines fun with learning etc.) It simply does not hold up to a toddler or clumsy preschooler Unfortunatley I have one of each. As any hardworking mother of the under five set knows sibling rivalry happens. One day the two were fighting over the L-Max and before I could 'leap' to the rescue of this ridiculously overpriced still not very durable toy (lol!) it landed on the hard floor and hasnt worked since. Unfortunately this occurred past the warranty date. So now my 4 year old has a non-functioning L-Max and 4 cartridges and is now beyond disappointed. We were even hoping to pass it on to the younger one. Not gonna happen tho. I tried to turn the incident into a 'treat your toys with care or else look what can happen' but thats a hard pill to swallow. even bought a gently used one on ebay , that one didnt work either but at least I got my $ back. I hope the company will add padding or somehow make the this L-Max hardy and durable!
