Leapster L-MAX Hardware (TV Feature)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Getting to know our new Leapster.
Two weeks ago we received this toy for our two sons aged three and seven, on ebay for US $113, we live in Australia. Our three year old has not become very interested in it. Our seven year old enjoys the games designed for the 4 - 6 year olds, rather than those aimed at his own age group. He does not spend a lot of time playing with it. Our set is red, and comes with a cover. It may be old stock.

The new set of four AA batteries we added in lasted two days, so I have purchased a 9 V powerpack from an electronics store. The powerpack came with a range of adaptors, and the larger size fitted the Leapster. I selected the lower powered option, and this is fine. I paid US$17 for this. I don't know if its possible to get a car adaptor for the Leapster.

I can't review the games so far. The L-MAX games work well on the TV via the long AV cable provided with the set. My initial experience appears to be that the games are educational, but the kids have not spent a lot of time with them. The pen button for TV use is beyond our three year old's capability as you have to touch the screen and click the pen button at the same time. It takes some concentrating at first. We haven't experienced any problems with the games.

We found an old mini-backpack to keep our Leapster safe and this has a small pocket for the games.

The four directional button on the left hand side does not work effectively, as when you select "down" it frequently activates "left" as well. This means your rabbit may move sideways instead of down!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mum to 4, 5 and 7 year old
I bought this Leapster L-Max for my 5 year old son, along with the Dora and Cars games. He absolutely loves it! Firstly, this is the first type of video game console I have ever bought for the kids. I'm not really into X-box or Play Station, etc as I think kids have enough technology these days (plus mine are so young -- I think those sorts of games are better for teenagers).

So as a first game console for my kids, I highly rate this product. I really like it because it is easy for him to use (eg I don't need to assist him constantly with it, helping to play the games as with some video games), they are educational games (rather than shoot 'em up, etc!), it's easily transportable (to play in the car, waiting at the doctor's, etc), it seems very durable, and the best part is with the Leapster L-Max you can hook it up to the TV so other children can watch as a child plays. This has been a great feature, as it allows my younger son (4) and daughter (7) to watch and then have a go.

So over all, I give it 4 and a half stars out of 5!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Grandsons loved it!
My 4-year-old grandson loves his Leapster...and the games available to go with it. His younger 2-year-old brother also loves it...unfortunately the younger one damaged the Leapster and it no longer responds correctly. But, we have purchased a second one because it is such great fun...and will keep it out of the hands of the younger brother until he grows old enough to take take care of it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Clarification!!
I won't get into how wonderful the Leapster L-Max is because that's already been done! I just wanted to clarify that YES you CAN play the original Leapster games on the L-Max in BOTH handheld AND TV mode!! I was confused about this and hence why I never bought it until seeing it 50% off. You can play ALL Leapster games on the L-Max in TV mode. The only difference is, the L-Max games have additional features to make the most of the TV link. The other games play just as normal but are visible on the TV and the handheld at the same time. Hope this clears up any questions! I wondered about this for a long time and could never find a clear answer until we bought one ourselves.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - NOT DURABLE
Buyers beware: we're on our second Leapster L-max in four months. Both worked great initially but eventually developed problems. The screen went dead on the first one. We returned it, waited several weeks for a refund, and purchased a second, hoping for better luck. After two months of use the second malfunctioned as well by turning itself off automatically a few minutes into the game (despite our having changed the batteries several times). I supervised our son while he played with it so can say with certainty that he didn't damage, drop or mistreat the toy in any way. It just broke. Twice.

We won't be buying a third.
