Leapster L-MAX Hardware (TV Feature)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Difficulty in School
My 8 yr old grandson has trouble keeping up and following directions in school. With this product he has fun learning and if he doesn't following directions when playing the Leapster games it reminds him so he can make the corrections and move forward playing. So he is LEARNING in a fun way. He is able to process problems in a way we hope will carry forward in the class room. He really enjoys the product and I am very happy with it. Haven't had it long enough to determine durability.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent learning toy!!
This is truly another great product from leapfrog!! I bought 2 Leapster L-maxes for Christmas gifts. Leapfrog never disappoints. My four year old is already learning from the "Letters on the Loose" game and my six year old is starting to make sense of the math that she is having trouble with in school with the "Scooby Doo" game. The games are just as much fun as they are educational. With the ever extending library of games right up through 4th grade levels from what I've seen, it doesn't sound as though it will be anytime soon that my kid's will grow out of these toys. Leapfrog has managed to bring my kid's favorite characters to them at the touch of their fingertips. I've read some reviews about the toy just shutting off and not working....both my kids have dropped their l-maxes more than a few times already and I am not experiencing any problems with either of them. Leapfrog is a good name and if anything does happen with these games, I won't hesitate to replace them. I sure beats any other video game system for youngsters! I know nintendo, playstation and wii don't offer the educational library that leapfrog does. I would strongly recommend this toy to any parent....it was a no-brainer choice for me!! The only disappointment that I have is that is does not come with a rechargeable battery pack or an AC adapter. These are sold separately with the recharge dock for half the price of the game system itself. Just as a precaution for anyone thinking about buying one....I bought rechareable batteries thinking I could save some money. I did save money, but my kids can only play their games for about 3 hours before the batteries need recharged. My advice.. invest in the recharging station and the AC adapter. It's a car ride stress reliever!!!!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Screen Scratches Easily
I bought this for my four year old son for Christmas to help him with his fine motor skills and learning to write. He loved the toy! His favorite cartridge is Animal Genius which has a "scratch and see" game where you
"scratch" the stylus across the screen to reveal an animal underneath. After playing it a couple of times, I noticed a couple of scratches on the screen and instructed my child to "scratch" more gently. Even though he was barely touching the screen with the stylus, the scratching of the screen continued and now its completely covered in scratches. I called LeapFrog and they told me to put the protective screen on, but the unit, which I ordered directly from them, didn't have a protective screen. They offered to send me one, but that didn't change the fact that my current screen was already ruined. After speaking to several different people and calling several different numbers (getting the royal run-a-round), I was told I could ship the unit back to them (at my expense) and they would attempt to fix it. So, I had to pack up my son's new favorite toy only 2 days after Christmas, ship it back to CA and wait to see if they will "fix it". Its a great toy, but make sure you have that protective cover if your child wants to play any "scratch and see" games!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great for a 3 year old....best present this Christmas!
My son received this for Christmas and he is just over 3 years old. It is not too young for a three year old...it is easy for him to use and learn the different games. It seems very durable (he carries it around by the pen or game cartridge on the top).
He loves the Thomas and Friends game and the Cars game.

Get this for your child! It seems pricey but they will use it for years and years.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - My 6 year old says its boring
I think this toy is a good idea - I bought it for last Christmas (2006). My son played with it about 4 or 5 times over the past year and would only play with it for about 5 minutes before throwing it down to head off for his video games. The graphics are very bland compared to video games and it just didn't hold his attention. However, he has been playing games on the computer since he was 2, so it might just be that he has always had more high tech stuff than this toy. My Niece has it and she plays with it every now and then. I wouldn't recommend it because for the price and the amount of time it holds their attention, I would say its not really worth it. Its one of those toys they forget about (like the Powertouch book was for us too).
