KitchenAid KICA0WH Ice Cream Maker Attachment

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best easy ice cream
I bought the mixer so I could use this ice cream maker. I also got the Ben & Jerry's recipe book and this makes perfect ice cream with no effort. The ice cream doesn't even develop ice crystals when frozen. You will not be dissapointed.

Product works as advertised; however, preparing the ingredients is quite time consuming. Unit must sit in freezer overnight before using, and the ingredients must be chilled at least eight hours before making the ice cream.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
I bought this thinking how cool it would be to use our brand new kitchen aid to make ice cream and that I would use this all the time and that was almost 2 years ago and I have only used it once! For one thing it takes an extensive amount of time to prepare the unit to use it. You have to put the bowl in the freezer (if you have room that is) for at least 12 hours to allow the bowl to be frozen and than you can put it on your Kitchen Aid and you let it run for about 15 min with the ice cream mixture than its back into the freezer with the bowl to allow the ice cream to harden. Although it looks nice to me it was a waste of money. I would have been better off buying a Ice Cream Maker for half the price.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best IceCream Maker Ever!
I read the reviews of this product and almost didn't buy it. But, don't be mislead -- this is the best ice cream maker we have ever used. Twenty odd years ago we had a salt based hand cranked ice cream maker which we traded for an electric salt-based model. Then we bought a Rival--worked well, but we had to rig extension cords to keep it in the freezer while we made ice cream.
Using the French Vanilla recipe in the instructions, we just made the best ice cream ever with the lowest input of labor. There is no problem adding ingredients. We make ice cream about twice a month, so we feel qualified to comment. The ice cream maker was easy to set up and use -- and most importantly, it works. You may want to allow 40 minutes rather than the 20 to 30 suggested to make fabulous ice cream.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - I scream! You scream! Home-made Ice Cream!
I have wanted to make some home-made ice cream for awhile. It was something my Grandparents used to do in the summertime, and I always really loved it. After recently buying the KitchenAid Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer, getting this attachment was a no-brainer.

It took me awhile to get the hang of this. First off, the attachment doesn't "click on" like the bread hook, but is held in place by the pressure between the mixer and the bowl. The instructions didn't make this clear, and there are some parts that come with this attachment I didn't end up using. It depends on what kind of stand mixer you have. However, once that was figured out making the ice cream was a breeze.

It is definitely not "instant ice cream", or something that can be made on the spot. The bowl has to be frozen for about several hours before using. If you have the space, then you can just leave the bowl in the freezer by my refrigerator is too small for that. Once you have the bowl cold enough, you mix the ingredients together and then pour them into the bowl with the mixer running, which takes about 20 minutes.

The ice cream you are going to get will be "soft serve" consistency. You can put the finished product into the fridge to firm it up a bit, but it will crystallize and become more like sherbet. I haven't managed to get really thick creamy ice cream yet, but I will keep trying.

This attachment comes with a simple recipe book to get you started, but I recommend picking up the Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book as a supplement.
