I was skeptical at first; honestly, when I heard it while still in the box, I thought, oh no. Not another annoying toy. And yes, some days I think I will go crazy if I hear "H says hhhhh, H says hhhhh" one more time. That being said, I think it has helped my son learn the alphabet and recognize letters. He got it for his second birthday and at 3.5 yrs old, still plays with it all the time. My younger son who is now 20 months has loved the toy for some time.
It is easy for kids to put the letters into the "machine" and doesn't cause frustration. It has been dropped on the floor, thrown etc innumerable times and still holds up. I have only changed the batteries once in a year in a half. I highly recommend this toy!

As a former first-grade and Title I reading teacher, I am very impressed with all of LeapFrog's products. By her second birthday, my daughter produced very few sounds and words (due to chronic ear infections in her second year of life). However, she knew her LETTERS!!! Not only could she recognize them but also verbalized the letter names/sounds when asked. Thank you, LeapFrog! I would recommend this Fridge Phonics Magnetic Set accompanied by the Letter Factory DVD. It is nice to have a line of toys that is dependably educational and fun for my child at the same time. Even the sound effects on LeapFrog toys are less annoying and more enjoyable than other kids' toys. Usually there is a volume control as well. (We have lots of the LeapFrog toys, if you haven't figured that out!)

My 2 year old son got this as a gift and loves it. In less than a week, he was able to recognize almost all of the letters and now, after 3 months he is remembering sounds of the letters. He still gets a little confused once in a while, but for the most part he knows just about all the letters and sounds. This is probably one of the few toys that he plays with every single day. It keeps him entertained while I cook or do dishes, or am tending to his baby brother. He likes to bring me the letters and tell me what they are and what sound they make, and then he places the magnet into the slot and listens to the little song. He is always so proud when he gets it right. I have never been so impressed with a toy. Definitely worth having all those magents on the fridge. Also, they are much safer than the old fashioned letters I had when growing up. The magnet is covered so no worries of swallowing magnets. A nice durable toy that will provide much entertainment.

This toy is a wonderful and fun way to teach kids letters. My two-year-old loves playing with it. As soon as I showed him how it works (you can fit each letter into the base and then it sings a little song), he had a blast. The English alphabet is pretty complicated, with most letters making more than one sound, but the song addresses that (sometimes a little awkwardly).
Phonetically, for the letter E:
"EEE! EEE! EEE says EEE! Every letter makes a sound, EEE says EEE! And... EH!"
The sound quality is quite decent for such a tiny base, and the words are very easy to understand. There is a two-level volume control (a must for most parents), although the lowest volume is still relatively loud. There's also a little music note button that will play the alphabet song that the kids love to dance to.
If your little one is constantly underfoot while you're trying to do something in the kitchen, this is a great way to keep him nearby and occupied while teaching him letters.
Some reviews complained that the base would occasionally say the wrong letter. We didn't have that problem, but it seems to be just a manufacturing error that would definitely be eligible for return.

My daughter received this as a gift on her 2nd birthday and she learned the sounds in one week! She does gets bored very quickly. She plays for 5 minutes at a time and 3-4 times a day. My advice would be not to give all 26 letters to your child instead divide them in 2-3 parts. My daughter is 25 months old and she has already started the word whammer.
