My three years old son knows the names of the basic shapes--circle, triangle, square, oval, rectangle. However, he has difficulty in saying them out loud. This puzzle encourages/prompts him to name each shape as he place it in. The pieces are very colorful and sturdy. The wooden encasement keeps everything tidy. My son got tired of this puzzle within a few days. I would not recommend you buy this unless you're planning to pass it on.

I only wish I bought this toy sooner! It was too easy for my 2 and 1/2 year old. She mastered all of the puzzles under 10 minutes. I thought for sure after the 10 minutes was over, she would stop playing with them forever but she still has fun playing with them. She's a little bored with the puzzles but uses the blocks to create her own art/patterns on the floor. Great fun and it keeps her busy while I get supper ready.

My students enjoyed this toy for the first week or so... than they began to grow very bored with it and it stayed on the shelf ever since. I'm glad I bought it, because I can use the pieces for other educational uses and since they have played with the game in the past, they can relate to the other uses better.

I gave this toy to my almost two niece. It was an instant hit. When her mother put it away, she would point to the shelf and beg: "Puzzle, puzzle" to get it again. The variety of pictures to fill in is impressive, and the statement about lead free paint very reassuring. I will definitely buy it again for other wee relatives!

I bought this based solely on all the reviews I had read that this was a must have for your toddler. My two year old son played with it about half an hour when we first received it. He still enjoys playing with it, but it only holds his attention for maybe 5 minutes now. He is really good at puzzles, so maybe it's too easy for him. Once you know where to put all the shapes, you've pretty much mastered the whole box of patterns. It is cute and well-made, like all Melissa & Doug products, but this is not an essential toy for a two year old.
