Electronic Battleship Advanced Mission

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - love BATTLESHIP?
...then you'll love this one! Like many reviewers have said, no longer do you have to fear about cheating, especially when playing against your child! A computer now has the job of keeping track of where your ships are
and reporting when the shot you fire is a hit or a miss. However, because of this system it may take longer to set up your ships, if you're not using one of the 100 (or so) preprogrammed fleet formations found in the manual. It has 4 different game modes: classic, salvo (fire until you miss), bonus (one shot per ship you have left), and of course, ADVANCED MISSION! What's so special, you ask? All your ships (except the tiny patrol boat) will get special weapons that can hit multiple spaces at once. You can also launch 2 recon planes from your aircraft carrier and use the submarine's sonar to scan enemy territory for enemy ships. This game, however, gets a 1 star for educational value because one has to admit that Battleship relies almost completely on pure luck. If you happen to be the only one awake at late night or just home alone, you can always play a game with the game computer, selecting from 3 different skill levels. All in all a great buy, and here's the lowdown:

PROS
-computer keeps track of your coordinates
-different sound effects and flashing lights (transmissions from ships, hit/miss/scan reports, etc.)
-game unit can be folded and transported easily

CONS
-the game voice may be hard to understand
-AI could be improved, as it barely ever scans your ships
-keyboard has small keys, and could be located in a more eye-level place (you have to be continually looking down to use it)
-tiny recon planes, easily to misplace
-some pegs on the vertical (upright) grid will be incredibly hard to remove (almost every game i had to use pliers to remove them)
However, you can fix the peg problem by using it on the horizontal (bottom) grid. There's two slots on the ends that you can use to make the grid pop up and push the pegs out from the bottom, greatly easing the pain of removing pegs.

TIPS
-some people have recommended the other version of this game, the one in the green box. apparently the keyboard is directly below the upright grid, and some of the weapons have been changed.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent
This game is durable, fun, educational, and filled with options. You can play against the computer, with a friend, or if all the different games aren't your speed, play the original way with the computer off. I do agree with some of the reviews suggesting the lack of lights on the actual battlefield, but that would be perfection-and, nothing is perfect. This has all the levels from basic to challenging depending on your level of patience and determination to figure out the game strategies. This may not be suitable for those who just want to open the game and play. You MUST read the directions for setup and strategies. This takes time and patience. Great for the motivated and skilled(my 7 year old enjoys this). A+ for all the options available on this game!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Addictive, Fun for ALL ages
Purchased this game (GREEN box) for my 9 yr old son about a month ago. I'm a married father of 6 (ages range from 6 to 16 yrs old). If you enjoy the classic Battleship, you'll no doubt enjoy this game. This game will not end up in the attic or some excluded location in an unused closet. Although a bit slower, even the 6 yr old enjoys this game.

EBAM can be played by 2 players or against the computer. There are 3 skill levels when you play the computer (the computer "thinks" more as you raise the skill level). You then get to choose from 3 "mission types"; Territorial Waters (like the classic, you get 1 shot/turn), Salvo (you get as many shots as you have ships remaining/turn) and Target + 1 (if you get a hit, you go again until you miss). You then choose "Basic Weapons" (Classic Battleship) or Advanced Weapons (you have, in addition to the "classic weapon", 2 air squadrons to search & shoot with, Harpoon missiles (1), Tomahawk missiles (2), anti-aircraft missiles (to shoot the squadrons), torpedoes (2) and sonar). The advanced weapons have assorted "search" and/or "hit/miss" patterns and are available as long as the ship they are assigned to isn't sunk. You can manually setup your "squadron" or choose from 1 of 100 predetermined "formations" displayed in the back of the instruction manual (i.e. don't lose the manual, if you do, Hasbro has a website that you can go to, to download the manual (PDF)). By the way, the computer uses these predetermined formations (if you're really desperate and you have sunk a couple, you can try to find what formation the computer is using).

The voice commands and sound effects are quite clear and loud (you can "turn down the volume" a bit by not elevating the "hit board"). The instructions are very easy to follow and the "computer" won't let you make a mistake. There is also a REPEAT and a CANCEL if you need to hear the last message again or change your last "move" before you FIRE.

We had only 2 major recommendations for Hasbro. They didn't "compartmentalize" the 3 different colored pegs (hit, miss and found), so they all get mixed together in 1 large single compartment. The 2 squadron "pegs" are very small and short (very difficult to handle for us "fat" fingered adults), so we usually put them on the end of a peg.

All in all everyone loves to play this game. You can't beat the price, and we ordered ours from Amazon (lowest price) and received it in 3 days!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - It's a hit.
This game is better than I expected, and my kid loves this game. He still has to learn all the new weapons, but the game will allow him to play against the computer to bone up on his strategy.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - OK
My daughter didn't really care much for this game. Little difficult to use, and the preprogrammed games are not that easy to program.
