Amazon.com: Jess Franco, the Spanish director known for soft-core films featuring vixens in various precarious situations, successfully incorporates Bram Stoker's Dracula into his repertoire with Count Dracula. Starring Hammer's Dracula Christopher Lee, this film is unrelated to the Hammer films, to its credit. This film may be the most accurate telling of Stoker's classic vampire story, so faithful is it to the novel, even to include many of the book's lines in the script. With an array of truly Gothic, medieval sets, and a cast well-versed in horror, including Klaus Kinski (Werner Herzog's Nosferatu) as Renfield, and Soledad Miranda (Vampyros Lesbos) as Lucy, Count Dracula authentically captures Stoker's careful blend of physical monstrosity and sexual fetish to portray the Count's quest for eternal life. For example, few vampire films besides Franco's take time to feature Lucy and her lover Quincy's blood transfusions that reinforce blood's metaphoric connection to sexual desire. Moreover, Maria Rohm plays Mina Harker with the proper innocence to serve as a foil character to her promiscuous friend, Lucy. Dr. Van Helsing, in this film, gets ample opportunity to sleuth vampirism. Franco relays the story of this Transylvanian count who leaves his castle in the Carpathian mountains for a house in England by accentuating the sexual aspects of the plot, which is what any Franco fan would hope for. Additionally enlightening is this DVD's featurette, in which Franco describes his theories about vampire films. --Trinie Dalton

I saw Count Dracula once on late night Los Angeles television back in the 1980's and could never locate it again. I have never forgotten the scene where Sir Christopher Lee informs Harker of Dracula's ancestry. Not only was it a direct quote from Bram Stoker, but the power of his performance added by just a hint of those vampire fangs in the close ups left me impressed.
This "Special Edition" DVD version is actually the French release, with the French titles and credits, remastered with ... Read More

Christopher Lee (HORROR OF DRACULA, THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN), Herbert Lom (LADYKILLERS, Stephen King's THE DEAD ZONE) and Klaus Kinski (NOSFERATU: THE VAMPYRE) star in this stylistique version of Stoker's tale. I have not finished it but I plan to soon, so far so good! Have no rating yet.

Jess Franco's version of Count Dracula is superb. Christopher Lee has a look that is very much like Frank Langella's rendition. The story follows the book by Bram Stoker beautifully. Klaus Kinski gives a truly brilliant performance (as usual) as the creepy and nutty Renfield, adding a certain amount of fragility to the character. This film also delves much deeper into Renfield's past/what made him this way. I highly recommend watching Jess Franco's Count Dracula AND Nosferatu The Vampyre to see Kinski's ... Read More

You simply can not beat Christoper Lee as our ubiquitous Lord of the Vampires. I know (and love) Lugosi's defining performance, thought Palance did a remarkable job, thought Langella brought an immense sensuality to the role, and Oldman's take on the character was brilliant...
..but friends, my humble opinion is that Mr. Lee was just born to play the Count, and this film is my submitted evidence.
Now, that said, it's obvious I've watched all of the Hammer films (and loved almost ... Read More

Directed by Spaniard Jess Franco, "Count Dracula" is quite faithful to Stoker's classic (at least in comparison to the other Dracula-themed movies at the time this was made). Christopher Lee is magnificent as the malevolent count Dracula, and plays his role very well, though it's a bit of a departure from the "Dracula" he portrayed in the Hammer movies, the hissing and exaggerated theatrics being noticeably, and refreshingly absent in this adaptation. He does epitomize Stoker's "Dracula" though - the intense ... Read More
